Nokia leaves Symbian for Linux?

First of all the answer. Impossible!
This started with a recent article from ARCchart which says that Nokia could use Linux ( like Palm will do in the future with their handhelds ) for the Series60 platform.
The main reason for this was that Nokia, even if it owns about 50% of Symbian Ltd, pays a 5$ license on every phone sold with Symbian OS. This 5$ fee is insignificant thinking that the other parts of a Series60 phone usually cost way over 100$.
Another reason was that Nokia has developed the Nokia 770 tablet on Linux instead of Symbian OS. The reason why Nokia did this is because Linux is better for this job. Nokia 770 is not even a phone. Is a totally different gadget. For such a device Linux is a big advantage because with a small effort they will port open-source programs to Nokia 770's proprietary Linux.
I find the migration, for Nokia's Series60, impossible because Nokia is just doing a great job with Series60 now. They have 75% of the SmartPhone market. This shows that this Symbian OS - Nokia formula is a great one and Nokia does not want to lose it's market share with such a switch

Smartphone sales doubled in second quarter

Symbian extends its market share lead over Microsoft and Palm, according to the latest worldwide market share study.
Worldwide shipments of smartphones more than doubled in the second quarter of this year compared to the same quarter a year ago to 12 million now, with less than 6 million a year ago. I find this to be very good news especially for the Symbian market which has increased to 76% compared to Linux 13%, PalmOS 4%, Windows 4% and RIM 1%.
Nokia ships now 63% of all mobile devices running an OS, compared to Microsoft 16% and Palm 10%.
Also Nokia increased it's market share from 33% to 55%.
This is very good news for Symbian phone owners and especially for Nokia Series60 owners

This is the ultimate club/pub/cinema/train fun you can have with your bluetooth enabled mobile phone.
Throughout Bluejacking you can scare, make fun of or flirt with a person with a bluetooth enabled phone that is within 10 meters of you.
Using Bluejacking you can send anonymous messages to another bluetooth enabled device and best of all it's absolutely free.
To Bluejack someone you need to create a contact on your phone and in the name field you should type your message. Then select "Send via bluetooth", select a target and then see who has the phone you've just Bluejacked.
There are some programs that make this process more complex if you want it like that. One of them is the new Nokia Sensor ( article ) developed by Nokia as a social bluetooth app. The only issue is that is works only with newer phones ( Series60 v2 only ). The other is MobiLuck which is compatible also with older devices and the Nokia 6230.

Another article which may not be exactly related to Symbian but is a tool that I like very much. The think is called Google Mobile.

It works on every WAP 2.0 enabled phone, not only on Symbian.

Those guys really deserve to be number one in phone reviews. I enjoy every review they make. Maybe they might just work a little bit on the translations and spelling but this is not a bit issue.

Cell Phones vs iPod

I want to tell my opinions in this blog, not just post about phones and software.
Everybody knows, even if they admit or not, that the main and only player in the portable music industry is the Apple's iPod. And direct competitors have absolutely no change against such a market monopoly. For example, I am a big Symbian fan, I know that I can play music on it, but I still always carry on my neck a iPod Shuffle for listening to music. The iPod is just to good to have an alternative to it. The excellent sound, autonomy, and iTunes integration make it the best in business.
But the situation may change. New Symbian Phones ( Nokia 6680 ( article ), and 6681/6682 ( article ) ) come with pretty good stereo MP3 playback. And the 3G/EDGE becomes slowly a standard for mobile networks data transfer. This can be the background of a future big business because mobile carriers can distribute music directly to mobile devices, which can give them a good advantage over the cable-only iPod. All this idea needs for success are some cheaper mobile phones that can support high quality music playback and some decent rates for getting the music. This can make me adopt the mobile for music playback.
But unfortunately now the situation is a bit different, at least here in Europe. The 3G networks are just at the begging, the music playback in Symbian Phones is absent or very bad. You can only find decent music playback in 500$+ phones. In this way you can't compete with iPod. Even the new Nseries ( N70 ( article ), N90 ( article ), N91 (article) ) phones does not change the situation too much.

SmartPhone = N-Gage

This equality is true for the future Nokia SmartPhones. You will be able to play N-Gage games on your Nokia Series60 ( without cracking the game, like some people do now ).
This is a very important thing for the mobile gaming industry thinking that Nokia will ship this year 25 million SmartPhones and until 2008 it will have 250 million phones shipped. This is much more than PSP + DS together. Just imagine that in a few years you will be able to get a Mobile Console, a Music Player, a Movie Player, Mobile Browser, a Digital Camera and most important a very good Nokia Smartphone in just one lightweight device.
The integration of the N-Gage brand in the usual SmartPhones will start in about six months. I'm really waiting for this. I'm not the king of guy that would buy PSP but I'll go for sure for a N-Gage.

iPod Shuffle

I've bought an iPod Shuffle with 512MB of memory. I know this has nothing to do with Symbian but I've made this article because I've wanted to tell why I have not bought a Nokia SmartPhone with MP3 Playback instead ( Nokia 3230 ( article ) for example ).
The Nokia SmartPhones are extremely expandable with all kind of software ( read the blog for different articles ). This includes music playback ( OggPlay ( article ) for Ogg Vorbis playback ). This is great, you can have a phone that does all kind of nice things plus music playback. But unfortunately the situation is not exactly like that. The playback is disappointing. You can compare it with the playback, on the PC, of a 32kbps song. It has no bass, sounds very bad, the memory is low ( it depends of the size of your memory card, but if you only have the card shipped with the phone have only 32 or 64MB ) and the saddest thing of all is that the sound is mono.
All these things made me buy a iPod Shuffle for music playback. I have more memory, better battery life, much better sound than I would have with a Nokia SmartPhone used for Music Playback. But the situation will change with the new Nokia Nseries N91 ( article ) which will have a 4GB HDD plus all things that a Series60 phone usually has.

At the end of Q1 2005, cumulative shipments of Symbian OS phones since Symbian's formation reached 32m phones.
At the end of Q1 2005, the number of commercially available third party applications for Symbian OS phones had reached 3,804 (end Q1 2004 1,962 applications)
During Q1 2005, nine new phones based on Symbian OS commenced shipping from four licensees, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, Panasonic and Nokia.
As at March 31st 2005, 48 phones were shipping (Q1 2004 18 phones) to more than 200 network operators around the world from nine Symbian OS licensees: BenQ, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, Motorola, Nokia, Panasonic, Sendo, Siemens and Sony Ericsson.

The only thing I don't exactly know is how you can find in 10 meters around you a person with a Series60 phone and this app installed that doesn't have anything else to do than seek people that matches this extremely rare case. But I think that Nokia knows better than me the utility of such a thing. With Wi-Fi it would be very nice ( 450 meters around, not just 10 ) but with Bluetooth I'm a bit circumspect of the utility of this thing.

Frozen Bubble

CellTrack is a program that collects some information about the cell you are connected to, like the Net Monitor.
It runs only on Series60.
You can see the ID of the cell, the Location Area Code ( LAC ), the net you are moving in, the name of the cell and more. Very interesting is also a stat about the quality of the receive signal.
The program has a cell database with descriptions of the cells.
