Nokia N90 Review

The Nokia N90 got a review from Mobile Review. They reviewed the Phone and the Camera

in two separate articles. The review is great. Unfortunately now I've found out that this enormous phone has an inferior battery

fMSX for Series 60

"MSX emulator for Series 60. MSX is an 8-bit home computer that first saw light in 1983. With this emulator you can play games available in the web for the MSX platform
There are two flavors of the emulator:
  • "a" which works on all Series 60 based devices
  • "b" which is specially optimized for Symbian OS 7.0s or newer based devices (e.g. Nokia 6600). The "b" flavor runs faster on Symbian OS 7.0s or newer based devices than the "a" flavor and it supports some of the new OS features. The "b" flavor does not work at all on Symbian OS 6.1 based devices (such as Nokia 7650 or Nokia 3650)"
I find emulating different platforms on the Series60 a great thing. This is yet another emulator that you can try. Download it from this site

MMC Compatibility List

Howard Forums has a post with a MMC Compatibility List that will help you when you will need to buy a new MMC card for your mobile phone. In theory all MMC cards work the same. In fact some might not be compatible with your phone and the only way to find out is see that experiences had some people with different brand of cards. This is the thread with the list

BlueJacking

This is the ultimate club/pub/cinema/train fun you can have with your bluetooth enabled mobile phone.
Throughout Bluejacking you can scare, make fun of or flirt with a person with a bluetooth enabled phone that is within 10 meters of you.
Using Bluejacking you can send anonymous messages to another bluetooth enabled device and best of all it's absolutely free.
To Bluejack someone you need to create a contact on your phone and in the name field you should type your message. Then select "Send via bluetooth", select a target and then see who has the phone you've just Bluejacked.
There are some programs that make this process more complex if you want it like that. One of them is the new Nokia Sensor ( article ) developed by Nokia as a social bluetooth app. The only issue is that is works only with newer phones ( Series60 v2 only ). The other is MobiLuck which is compatible also with older devices and the Nokia 6230.

The Mobiles Show Podcast

After I've bought my iPod I've starter to search some nice podcasts to listen to. And what could be better than a Podcast about Symbian, Mobile Games and 3GSM. This podcast's name is "The Mobiles Show" and can be found in ThePodcastNework.com

Google XHTML Search

Another article which may not be exactly related to Symbian but is a tool that I like very much. The think is called Google Mobile.
"Google mobile lets you search and view the Web on your mobile phone. Google takes HTML pages normally viewed on a computer and translates them so that you can see them when you're on the go. To get started, simply type in your search query, and Google will return the most relevant results in a format your phone understands."
It works on every WAP 2.0 enabled phone, not only on Symbian.
You can search the Web, Images and Local with the possibility of turning SafeSearch on and off.
You can view it in your desktop browser if you what to know how it looks like.
The address is http://www.google.com/xhtml

Nokia 6680 and 3230 Reviewed

My favorite review site, Mobile Review, made two reviews about this two phones.
This is the one for Nokia 6680 and the one for Nokia 3230.
Those guys really deserve to be number one in phone reviews. I enjoy every review they make. Maybe they might just work a little bit on the translations and spelling but this is not a bit issue.

SMSTray

"With SMSTray, you'll be automatically notified of received text messages directly on your desktop, and be able to easily reply or send new text messages without touching your phone.
SMSTray features full address book integration, sent message notification, and is simple to setup and use. SMSTray takes full advantage of Bluetooth connectivity with your phone to provide a seamless text message environment."
Nice for someone that is tired of typing on the phone and wants to send and receive sms directly from the computer. Not my king of app. I love my phone too much to miss an occasion of typing something on it.
It's made by WildPalm and it costs 9.9E. You need Windows XP Service Pack 2 to use this you can buy it from WildPalm

512MB DV RS MMC

"ATP Electronics Inc., a leading manufacturer of digital flash media products, today announced that it is in mass production of high capacity dual voltage RS-MMC (DV RS-MMC). The dual voltage (DV) feature allows for compatibility with devices running on the conventional 3.0V as well as with the dual voltage 3.0/1.8V devices. The low voltage feature translates to much lower power consumption, meaning longer battery life for both today and tomorrow's mobile digital devices. Card capacities of 128MB and 256MB are available immediately. The 512MB is now available for ordering."
It costs 139$ and you can buy it from usamemory.net

Cell Phones vs iPod

I want to tell my opinions in this blog, not just post about phones and software.
Everybody knows, even if they admit or not, that the main and only player in the portable music industry is the Apple's iPod. And direct competitors have absolutely no change against such a market monopoly. For example, I am a big Symbian fan, I know that I can play music on it, but I still always carry on my neck a iPod Shuffle for listening to music. The iPod is just to good to have an alternative to it. The excellent sound, autonomy, and iTunes integration make it the best in business.
But the situation may change. New Symbian Phones ( Nokia 6680 ( article ), and 6681/6682 ( article ) ) come with pretty good stereo MP3 playback. And the 3G/EDGE becomes slowly a standard for mobile networks data transfer. This can be the background of a future big business because mobile carriers can distribute music directly to mobile devices, which can give them a good advantage over the cable-only iPod. All this idea needs for success are some cheaper mobile phones that can support high quality music playback and some decent rates for getting the music. This can make me adopt the mobile for music playback.
But unfortunately now the situation is a bit different, at least here in Europe. The 3G networks are just at the begging, the music playback in Symbian Phones is absent or very bad. You can only find decent music playback in 500$+ phones. In this way you can't compete with iPod. Even the new Nseries ( N70 ( article ), N90 ( article ), N91 (article) ) phones does not change the situation too much.

Xedious

"Clone for the classic coin-op arcade game Xevious. Maps and graphics adapted from the xbat game for Unix. Contains 16 levels and three difficulty settings. Help for controls is included in the game (wait a few seconds in the title screen for the instructions to appear). No sound."
From the makers Contact Transfer ( article ) you have this game.
Download it from this site

Contacts Transfer

"Have you ever tried to copy the contacts database from one Series 60 based phone to another? Perhaps using a PC suite or SyncML? Perhaps you have noticed that something was missing in the end? No problem, with the Contacts Transfer application you can copy the entire contents of the contacts database including thumbnail images and caller groups from one phone to another via bluetooth, infra-red or a memory card."
You can get the app from this site

Nokia.Com got a new look

Nokia has updated it's web site. I use to visit Nokia's site many times a week to see what new phones appear. The new site is 100% in Flash and may be nice for some people. I'm used to the old design and that was the one I've liked most.
Nokia.Com

SmartPhone = N-Gage

This equality is true for the future Nokia SmartPhones. You will be able to play N-Gage games on your Nokia Series60 ( without cracking the game, like some people do now ).
This is a very important thing for the mobile gaming industry thinking that Nokia will ship this year 25 million SmartPhones and until 2008 it will have 250 million phones shipped. This is much more than PSP + DS together. Just imagine that in a few years you will be able to get a Mobile Console, a Music Player, a Movie Player, Mobile Browser, a Digital Camera and most important a very good Nokia Smartphone in just one lightweight device.
The integration of the N-Gage brand in the usual SmartPhones will start in about six months. I'm really waiting for this. I'm not the king of guy that would buy PSP but I'll go for sure for a N-Gage.

Symbian Phones Redesign

Symbian Phones Blog got a redesign in the AdSense area because the CTR was awful.
Hope you like the new look of the blog.

Nokia PC Suite

"Nokia PC Suite is a package of Windows-based PC applications developed especially for use with Nokia phones.
Depending on your phone model, it lets you synchronize, edit, and back up many of your phone's files on a compatible PC through a wireless or cable connection.

Depending on your phone model, you can use PC Suite to:
  • Back up and restore phone files
  • Transfer information, pictures, and music from phone to phone, phone to PC, or PC to phone
  • Synchronize your phone and PC calendars
  • Edit contacts, pictures, and phone file names
  • Install software (games, themes, utilities) on your phone
  • Convert ringing tone formats
  • Connect by using your phone as a modem"
The latest version works only with Windows XP and 2000. If you have and older Windows you should get an older version of PC Suite. Is a must have for every Nokia Phone owner.
Read more and download at Nokia's PC Suite Site

iPod Shuffle

I've bought an iPod Shuffle with 512MB of memory. I know this has nothing to do with Symbian but I've made this article because I've wanted to tell why I have not bought a Nokia SmartPhone with MP3 Playback instead ( Nokia 3230 ( article ) for example ).
The Nokia SmartPhones are extremely expandable with all kind of software ( read the blog for different articles ). This includes music playback ( OggPlay ( article ) for Ogg Vorbis playback ). This is great, you can have a phone that does all kind of nice things plus music playback. But unfortunately the situation is not exactly like that. The playback is disappointing. You can compare it with the playback, on the PC, of a 32kbps song. It has no bass, sounds very bad, the memory is low ( it depends of the size of your memory card, but if you only have the card shipped with the phone have only 32 or 64MB ) and the saddest thing of all is that the sound is mono.
All these things made me buy a iPod Shuffle for music playback. I have more memory, better battery life, much better sound than I would have with a Nokia SmartPhone used for Music Playback. But the situation will change with the new Nokia Nseries N91 ( article ) which will have a 4GB HDD plus all things that a Series60 phone usually has.

QuickOffice

"Quickoffice Premier for Series 60 is the first mobile office suite to allow you to open, edit & save Microsoft® Word, Excel and PowerPoint® files directly on your Series 60 phone. Quickoffice Premier continues to evolve as the leading mobile office productivity suite and raises the bar in performance functionality.

System Requirements:
Quickoffice Premier v2.0 for Series 60 requires your smartphone to be using Symbian OS version 7 or higher. Some older Series 60 phones will not work with Quickoffice Premier v2.0, though our version 1.0 Quickoffice Viewers will allow you to open attachments for viewing only."

This is a Mobile Office Suite that works with Series60, UIQ and PalmOS.
It's formed of Quicksheet ( Excel-like ), Quickword ( Word-like ) and Quickpoint ( PowerPoint-like ).
It's main drawback is the huge price. This suite costs 49.95$
If you want to try it get it form QuickOffice.com

Extended Recorder

"

Extended Recorder is a tool which implements a very important and useful function missing in Series 60 phones: the ability of creating voice notes longer than 60 seconds and recording phone conversations!

Extended Recorder functionality is similar to standard Recorder, but it can do much more than a standard one! Registering voice notes had never been so easy! Now user may forget about 60 second limitations! The only limitation is the available disk space. Extended Recorder has the functionality of showing the remaining available record time.

Extended Recorder has two main functionalities: recording as a recording machine, and registering voice calls.

User may select whether to use phone memory or memory card for storing audio clips. The quality of the recording and its codec can be changed from Low (amr) to High (wav)."

It's a must have for me. I like recording some calls to listen them later. You can get it form Psiloc

Nokia Sensor

This is a app made by Nokia specially for Series 60 devices that works throughout Bluetooth.
With Nokia Sensor you can:
  • Spontaneous social circles
  • Your portable personality
  • Instant communities and networks
  • Free to download, free to use
  • Free file sharing
"Nokia Sensor is a spontaneous, sociable application for spontaneous, sociable people. With Nokia Sensor you can create your own personal pages - called a folio - on your phone. Then you can check out the folios of other Sensor users nearby, exchange messages, and share files."

The only thing I don't exactly know is how you can find in 10 meters around you a person with a Series60 phone and this app installed that doesn't have anything else to do than seek people that matches this extremely rare case. But I think that Nokia knows better than me the utility of such a thing. With Wi-Fi it would be very nice ( 450 meters around, not just 10 ) but with Bluetooth I'm a bit circumspect of the utility of this thing.
You can view a nice flash presentation, read more and download the app at Nokia

OggPlay

Audio Player for Symbian OS
OggPlay is an audio player for smartphones. OggPlay was initially written for SonyEriccson P800 and then released under the GPL by Leif H. Wilden. In a true open source project, OggPlay has been since ported to several Symbian phones.
Main features of OggPlay:
  • Plays .ogg audio files
  • Detects and plays audio format supported the phone (MP3, AAC, MP4,M4A)
  • Free!
  • Skins (you can make your own, or use already made ones)
  • User defined hotkeys
  • Autoplay
Features supported varies a lot depending on the phone OggPlay is installed on.
OggPlay is ported on Series60, Series80 and UIQ.

For converting your MP3 music collection to the much better and smaller Ogg Vorbis you can use:
dBpowerAMP Music Converter
and then transfer them to your phone using a Card Reader or a Bluetooth PC Connection. I suggest using a 64kbps for Ogg Vorbis to equal the quality of a 128kbps MP3.

You can download OggPlay and Skins here:
symbianoggplay.sourceforge.net

This is a real "must have" in your Series60 phone.
